Discussion:
If you have an idea for an Arizona Trailblazers club meeting location,
please send it to any of the officers. Dinner meetings are preferred.
It should be centrally located in Tempe or west Mesa.
-
Guest Speaker:
Amy Ford is an Interpretive Ranger with McDowell Mountain Regional Park.
Amy used props for us to talk about and learn about interpretive hike
leading. A saguaro boot, Gila monster, black widow spider, and javelina
skull prompted lively discussions on how to make a hike relevant.

Discussion:
Chuck Parsons described our plan for the Arizona Trail Centennial
Adventure. The Trailblazers will hike on passage 34 near Flagstaff,
where a new section of the Arizona Trail is being built.
-
Guest Speaker:
Michael Humphrey presented slides and videos from a wild, wet, and
amazingly scenic trip to New Zealand. The hikes are quite different
from Arizona, and jet-boating is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Guest Speaker
Karen Larson presented a slide show of pictures from Zion National Park in Utah.
Eileen Root and Karen camped 8 nights and hiked over 40 miles throughout the park.
There were photos of well known hikes, including The Narrows, and some of the
less traveled hikes. There will be another camping trip to Zion!
-
Next Meeting
Tuesday, May 17, 2011, 7:00 PM at Lucille’s Barbecue in the
Tempe Marketplace southwest of the 101 and 202 junction.
Seating and dinner begins at 6:00 PM.
Room reservation needs to be made.
|
Executive Council, March 9, 2011
attendees: Michael Humphrey, Eileen Root, Wendy Rennert, Ted Tenny
- Handicapped Hikers
Most of our leaders are not equipped or trained to lead handicapped hikers.
Wendy suggested park trails, some of which are smooth and offer excellent scenery.
-
Membership
For the first time the club has 50 paid members, Wendy reported.
-
Summer Hikes
Each of the officers had some ideas.
| Michael |
• Fire and Ice hike in Flagstaff.
• GPS Training Hike. This should probably be in the fall.
|
| Eileen |
• Sycamore Canyon, Flagstaff.
• Wet Beaver Creek, east of Sedona.
• Granite Mountain, Prescott.
• Parsons Spring, Clarkdale. Probably in the fall.
• Haunted Canyon, Globe. Probably in the fall.
|
| Wendy |
• Wilderness of Rocks, Tucson, on National Trails Day (June 4).
|
| Ted |
• Horse Lake, Flagstaff — should be a key exchange hike.
|
Chuck is leading a North Rim camping trip at the Grand Canyon on
June 10-13.
Other leaders will also want to schedule summer and fall hikes.
The calendar is getting full. If we start having more people sign
up than can go on a hike, the club should offer more than one hike on
the same day. This is already being done by the Sierra Club and AOTC.
The folks who attended Hike Leader Training on January 22 should be
encouraged to lead summer and fall hikes.
-
Guest speakers for May, July, September, November
May 17: Michael will present pictures from his recent New Zealand trip.
July 19, September 20, November 15: Wendy will check on speakers representing the
McDowell Sonoran Preserve and local Search and Rescue organizations.
Both Michael and Ted have backup slide shows of hike pictures, which
could be presented on short notice if we don’t get another guest speaker.

Hike Leader Training
Instructors Wendy Rennert, Chuck Parsons, and Ted Tenny will offer Hike
Leader Training this Saturday, January 22, on the Union Hills Loop day hike.
Anyone can attend, but please join us if you have ever thought of leading a
hike for the Trailblazers or just want to know what hike leadership is all about.
-
Guest Speaker:
Wish you had a hiking map with accurate topography, up-to-date trail
information, and points of interest clearly marked? It can be done!
AZHC Mapmaster Ted Tenny told the inside story of hiking maps and how you can
make a map like the pros (actually, better than most).
All questions answered, no holds barred.

Tuesday, January 18, 2011, 7:00 PM at Lucille’s Barbecue in the
