Guest Speaker: Terry Horne
subject: Creation, development and expansion of the Phoenix
Mountains Preserve
Dreamy Draw got its name from mercury mines in the area, whose
vapors made the miners dreamy.
The first trails were made for transportation, which was mostly on foot.
Sun Circle Trail, one of the earliest, went all around the Phoenix area.
Terry rides mules in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve to bring tools and
supplies to the crews building and maintaining trails.
He is President of Save Our Mountains Foundation, the lead
organization that runs the NMVC.
There are many opportunities for volunteers like us.
-
Election of Officers for 2017

Executive Committee, November 8, 2016
attendees: Michael Humphrey, Monika Hahues, Jim Buyens, Ted Tenny
- Election, November 15
All members of the Executive Committee will run for another term.
AI [Monika] → Send Ted a list of paid members.
AI [Ted] → Print ballots for the November club meeting.
- Guest Speakers for 2017
Four suggestions, and Ted can fill in for one meeting. We need to
coordinate calling prospective speakers so that we know which meetings
are open in 2017:
January 17, March 21, May 16, July 18, September 19, November 21
AI [Michael] → Contact the Geology Department at ASU.
AI [Jim] → Contact the Tonto National Forest.
AI [Ted] → Contact Chuck regarding the wildlife rescue organization.
AI [Monika] → Contact the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
- Awards, Ethnic Potluck
The club will be handing out REI gift cards and award certificates at
an ethnic potluck.
AI [Michael] → Contact Bill and Dave regarding a time and place.
- Whistles
Monika handed out illustrations. 250 is the minimum quantity.
AI [Monika] → Plan for buying whistles with the club name and logo.
- Window Stickers
They cost $3 each. Not everyone uses them.
- Event horizon on Web site (particularly for camping trips).
Sometimes we have blank months before a camping trip. Shouldn’t
be a problem, because everyone gets an email notification.
- Hike Leader Training and Recruitment
Nancy Anderson is the only new hike leader so far in 2016.
We discussed other potential leaders. Individual appeals work best.
Training should be during the picnic lunch on an easy,
scenic hike here in the valley. Time for speakers must be limited.
AI [all] → Talk to hikers who have leadership potential.

Guest Speaker: Bryan D. Hughes
subject: rattlesnakes
Bryan gave an informative talk about rattlesnakes in Arizona.
Most people who are bitten are doing something really dumb, like picking up
the snake. None of the common first aid methods do any good: you need to
get to the hospital as soon as you can. He showed slides of many different
kinds of snakes in Arizona.
Bryan works for Rattlesnake
Solutions.
They remove snakes from people’s property every day.
The snakes are then released, usually within a quarter mile.

Next Meeting

|
Executive Committee, June 28, 2016
attendees: Michael Humphrey, Bill Zimmermann, Jim Buyens, Monika Hahues, Ted Tenny
- Hiking Miles
On camping trips, the hikes described in advance in the write-up will be counted.
- Radios
Some of the radios need to be replaced.
AI [Michael] → Buy 4 or 6 new radios.
- 3rd Club Pack
Twice this year we have had three hikes on the same day.
A 3rd pack would mean that one of the leaders wouldn’t
have to go without.
However, there would be another pack to locate and manage.
AI [Michael] → Buy the equipment needed for another club pack.
- Web Server Change
We’ve hit a snag in the move from Globat to A2 Hosting. WHOIS had
an outdated email address for Ted, and wasn’t able to contact him to
correct it.
AI [Ted] → Finish the job and notify everyone.
-
Key Rings
We have less than 100 of the green key rings left.
Ted thinks key rings of a different color would be a better choice than
luggage tags, because people drive more often than they travel.
We could buy recent hike leaders a clothing article with the club logo.
AI [all] → Think of the best promotional item.
- 20th Year Party
It will include a catered dinner at Leisure World on October 22.
Monika sent out pictures of the facility.
The party will be free to paid members, each of whom may bring one guest.
Most of the arrangements still have to be made.
AI [Bill] → Make the reservation at Leisure World.
AI [Monika] → Compose an email announcing the party to paid members.
AI [Monika] →
Invite Chuck to give a 15-minute talk on the history of the club.
AI [Ted] → Put an announcement on the calendar, when possible.

The club had 35 hikes during the first part of the year.
There are open dates on the calendar in July and August.
Amazingly, no hikes in Flagstaff have been scheduled.

Treasurer [Monika Hahues] |
|
As of May 17, the club has 135 paid members and a bank balance
of $6694.77. Some of the members have not renewed.
Our biggest bill, insurance, is coming.
|
Webmaster [Ted Tenny] |
|
With multiple hikes on weekends, I’ve been sending an email
with links to the hike descriptions, instead of multiple emails or a long,
wordy email. My message includes the leader’s email address. If you
are interested in a hike, please don’t hit “Reply”.
Instead, send an email to the leader whose address I provide.

Statistician [Jim Buyens] |

Executive Committee, May 5, 2016
attendees:

-
AZHC Treasury
Monika reported that there is a surplus. The club takes in $1000 more than
it spends in a year. For $1000 we could throw a catered party for paid members
and their guests, in September or October.
Our club was founded in 1996 by Tom and Jeannie Van Lew as the Motorola
Hiking Club, so it would be a 20th anniversary celebration.
AI [Monika] → Plan the party.
AI [Michael] → Find out about Superstition Search & Rescue, who
might provide a guest speaker in 2017.
-
Reimbursement of Carpool Drivers
Costs need to be shared. However, if the only passenger has to pay
all expenses, they might well decide to drive instead. After much discussion
we decided on a guidline of $5 (local), $10 (Prescott, Mogollon Rim), $15
(Sedona, Tucson), $20 (Flagstaff), etc. Gas prices are always changing.
The amount of reimbursement is, of course, up to the carpool driver; but the
driver must explain ahead of time if it’s going to cost more.
-
Dignity Health June Safety Fairs
Three people responded. We can cover two of these events, or one.
AI [Michael] → Decide which volunteers will represent the club where, and when.
-
Club Representation at Health Fairs
We can do them if club members are willing. No one knows for sure if the people
who attended these events have gone on to hike with us.
-
Web Hosting
Our Globat plan expires on August 8, 2016. It will not be renewed.
Ted has already told Globat the plan will not be renewed, and why.
AI [Ted] → No later than July, switch to a different web hosting company.

• |
The club is growing. Twice this year we’ve had 3 hikes
on the same day.
|
• |
We’re looking into standardizing the carpool gas payments.
|
|
Treasurer [Monika Hahues] |
|
As of March 15 the club has 138 paid members; however,
6 memberships that expired in November and December and 8
that expired in January haven’t been renewed yet.
The bank balance as of 3/14/16 is $6,282.94.
|
Secretary [Ted Tenny] |
|
Things to keep in mind when sending in events for the AZHC calendar:
• |
When we have multiple events on the same day, links are sent
instead of multiple emails or a very long email.
|
• |
People have complained about non-Trailblazer events,
so I don’t send them.
|
• |
Attachments are never forwarded. Once I got in trouble for
forwarding an email attachment which turned out to contain a virus.
It won’t happen again.
|
|
Statistician [Jim Buyens] |
|
Monika Hahues is currently leading in miles hiked with the club.
We are starting to track carpool miles driven.
So far in 2016 we’ve had 20 events with 13 leaders.

Jerry Lang
subject: Close Encounters with Insect Life on the Trail
Jerry presented a slide show about venemous
arthropods found in Arizona, including scorpions, wasps, bees, ants,
spiders, ticks, chiggers, flies, centipedes, blister beetles, caterpillars,
and other wilderness species.
Most of us have been stung or bitten.
Every hiker should take the precautions which he recommends.

-
Web Hosting
The move away from Globat has been postponed because Ted’s work-around
– using a different email address to send out club notices – has been
successful so far.
Our Globat account expires on August 8, 2016, and will not be renewed.
AI [Ted] → No later than July, switch to a different web hosting company.
-
Hike Leader Training
Set for April 2. Jim will be the instructor.
-
Expired Email Addresses
Email addresses change. Some people are really good about notifying us,
while other people don’t bother.
Certain addresses on our list get returned as undeliverable.
AI [all] → When you find an updated email address, send it to the other club officers.
If a club member’s email address stops working, try to call them, once.
- Emails to the Club Mailing List
• attachments never forwarded — Ted got in trouble one time for forwarding an
email attachment which turned out to contain a virus. It won’t happen again.
• multiple events on the same day — links are sent instead of a very long email.
• non-Trailblazer events — people have complained about receiving them,
so Ted doesn’t send them.
-
Sharing Driving Expenses
Bill proposed a formula based on mileage and the cost of gasoline.
AI [Bill] → Send the formula to the other club officers for comments.
-
Carpool Driving Awards
Some folks prefer to drive, while others don’t.
AI [Jim] → Send the idea for carpool driving awards to the other club officers.
-
Luggage Tags
Many companies can make customized luggage tags with our name and logo on one side.
We’ll finish giving away the key rings before ordering something else.
- Guest Speakers for 2016
We need speakers for the May 17, July 19, and November 15 club meetings.
AI [Jim] → Contact the people on our list about speaking at these meetings.
• If all else fails, Michael and then Ted will be on standby.
-
AZHC Treasury
If there is too much money in the Treasury, the club can make a donation to
an Arizona volunteer wilderness rescue oeganization.

Guest Speaker: Ted Tenny
subject: Amazing Adventures on Superstition Hikes
Arizona’s starkly beautiful mountains are best seen on foot. As an
Arizona hiker since 1961 and full-time resident of the state for 25 years, Ted
has found out-of-the-way hikes in the Superstitions and all around Arizona
that are too often overlooked. His first person narratives of hikes in the
Superstition Wilderness include unexpected discoveries, and sometimes,
things which didn’t quite go according to plan.
