They expected battlefield injuries from Operation Desert Storm, but got
mostly volleyball injuries.
She answered many questtions about wilderness first aid, including snakes,
bites, bee stings (don’t look like a bear), heat injuries, punctures,
bleeding, and other topics.

Executive Committee, November 12, 2018
attendees: Tamar Gottfried, Andy Zaharchuk, Monika Hahues, Jim Buyens, Ted Tenny
- AZHC Awards, 2019
Papago Park seems to be a suitable place, provided they have an available ramada,
electricity, and they allow beer. It should be on Saturday, January 19 (the Saturday
after the club meeting). Blue Point Recreation Area is an alternative.
AI [Jim] → Follow up with Mark and find out availability and hiking options.
- Janis and Vanessa’s proposal
Our club makes donations to Arizona non-profit organizations. We’ll decide later.
- AHTC [formerly AZOTC] invitation (Andy’s action item from
September 6)
Andy brought a draft of the invitation. He has the AHTC mailing list.
AI [Andy] → Send it to the other officers for editing.
AI [Ted] → Send an edited version to the other officers.
- Honoring members for their accomplishments
Jim has written a book, Front Page 2003. But there are other club members
who have done remarkable things and deserve to be recognized.
AI [Ted] → Send out an email calling for nominations.
- Guest Speakers for 2019 (have three, need six)
Since we have guest speakers for January, March, and May, we can wait.
AI [Ted] → Contact potential speakers for later in the year.
- Deirdre’s proposal
Dogs are not allowed on Trailblazer hikes, because of an incident some years ago.
We should keep it that way.
- Whistles, etc.
Michael has 40 whistles left. Jim brought in pictures of various products that
could have the club’s logo, suitable for giving out.
AI [Jim] → Bring the pictures, and possibly others, to the November 20 club
meeting.
- Non-members on hikes
Contributions are voluntary because it’s illegal for another organization to
collect money on National Forest land.
- Electronic membership renewal
Lin tried it, and it works.
AI [Monika] → Include payment options in membership renewal notices.

Guest Speaker: Patrick Fuchs
Subject: Arizona Trail
Patrick recently completed hiking the entire Arizona Trail, all 43 passages, on weekends
from June 25, 2017, to May 19, 2018. The Mazatzals were his favorite.
The Arizona Trail is more rocky than the Pacific Coast Trail, and unlike the Appalachian
Trail, it doesn’t go to the top of every peak.
Everyone he asked for help was willing to help.
The Grand Canyon (passage 38) was the toughest, because there’s no water
along the South Kaibab Trail.

Elections.
|
Executive Committee, September 6, 2018
attendees: Tamar Gottfried, Andy Zaharchuk, Jim Buyens, Monika Hahues,
Ted Tenny
- Officer Candidates for 2019
All four elected officers are eligible to run for another term. We will all run again.
-
Guest speaker for 2019
We already have three:
Kelly Nalder - Appalachian Trail through hiker
Representatives from Central Arizona Mountain Rescue Association
Beth - Arizona Advocate for Leave No Trace
AI [Tamar] → Contact the speakers regarding meeting times.
- Do we want to renew the domain name "az-hikers.org"?
This domain was set up to try things. Ted isn’t using it. When there is a need
to try something different, Ted tries it first on his own web site, so if something goes
wrong it won’t affect the club.
AI [Ted] → keep the az-hikers.org domain name.
- Follow up on Arizona Trail donation
We made the donation to the Arizona Trail Association and will be sponsoring
the two trail days in October and November.
- Year-end dissolution of AHTC [formerly AZOTC]
We should put together and send a warm letter of introduction to their club members,
let them know about our club, what we do, and invite them to join our club if they wish.
There are many very fine individuals in AHTC, some who would be good hike leaders.
AI [Andy] → Compose a suitable message to members of AHTC.
-
Do we have to send invoices for membership renewals?
No, a simple text-only email would be sufficient.
-
Offering online payment thru Chase merchant service
We want people to renew their membership with minimal rigmarole.
The Treasurer can add a link to the membership renewal email, allowing them
to pay by credit card.
Ted has received many emails pretending to be from PayPal, trying to trick him
into clicking a link or opening an attachment.
But never one pretending to be from Chase.
AI [Monika] → Work out the details with Chase Bank.
- Should we ask carpool drivers not to drink alcohol at lunch/dinner?
We haven’t had a problem in this area.
Some club members bring beer for after the hike.
Others we are reluctant to ride with, because they seem unsafe without any alcohol.
After much discussion we decided to study this issue,
but not do anything for now.

Guest Speaker: Andy Zaharchuk
subject: GPS and PLB Devices
Andy told us all about GPS and Satellite Emergency Notification Devices,
how they work and their history.
He has a PLB, which could save his life in a place where there’s no
cell phone reception. For the best GPS accuracy, get a receiver that picks
up both the American GPS and the Russian GLONASS signals. The
NOAA SARSAT Rescue Map shows where rescues have taken place recently.

- whether to count kayaking as hiking
We decided not to count kayaking as hiking.
- revisit hike announcements
Can something still be a club hike if there are only a few spots left?
AI [Ted] → propose a policy change on this subject.
- Hikers who don't sign in
Ted recently had a hiker who said she was bringing a friend, but then her
friend didn't sign in.
AI [Ted] → Send an email to hike leaders reminding them
that everyone needs to be signed in.
- Window Stickers
We need more.
AI [Monika] → Bring more window stickers to the July 17 club meeting.
- Speakers for September 18 and November 20
September 18: Patrick Fuchs, Arizona Trail.
November 20: Karen White, First-Aid in the Field.
AI [Jim] → Send Ted Patrick’s contact information.
- Insurance/liability review (Tamar)
There may be additional forms to fill out.
AI [Tamar] → Find out about forms and options.
- A2 hosting renewal (Ted)
Ted’s account is bundled with the AZHC account, so they split the cost.
This way the club gets web hosting at half price and Ted gets web hosting at
half price.
- Ted's vacation, July 25-August 1
He will have email, but not the usual software tools.
AI [Ted] → Remind leaders to send August 4 hikes in early.

Guest Speaker: Mark Schwab
subject: Forest Service Abandoned Mine Lands Safety
Mark made a number of excellent points:
• Drowning is the most frequent cause of death in abandoned mines.
• No one knows where all the mines in Arizona are.
• The Coronado and Tonto National Forests have the most abandoned mines..
• Bats are the usual life form whose habitat needs to be protected
• Owners let us close the mine, rather than assume liability.
• The 1872 mining law is still in effect.
• Hikers often see signs which mark mining claims.

Executive Committee, May 7, 2018
attendees:
Tamar Gottfried, Monika Hahues, Jim Buyens, Ted Tenny
- Complaints about hike leaders.
No one can please everybody all the time.
Complaints are bound to happen eventually, and will be handled by the
Executive Committee on a case-by-case basis.
-
Whistles.
Michael Humphrey has most of the whistles.
We don’t need to order more.
-
Utensils/plates for camping trips.
The club won’t pay for them, but will encourage everyone to bring
their own.
-
Insurance/liability review.
Tamar contacted the insurance agent, but hasn’t received a reply.
AI [Tamar] → Recommend changes if need be.
-
Charitable Donations.
Superstition Search & Rescue doesn’t exist any more. We
might consider another organization, such as the Nature Conservancy. It
shouldn’t be any organization that AZHC officers are connected with.
-
Scholarships.
This would add more administration, which the club doesn’t need.
-
Radios.
Some of them have AA batteries, easy to replace. Others have gotten
separated from their custom chargers. Some of the hike leaders have their
own 2-way radios. Ted has a battery tester at home, and uses it before
leading a hike.
AI [Ted] → Remind the hike leaders to bring club packs to the May 15
meeting.

Guest Speaker
Tamar Gottfried, MD
subject: Wilderness First Aid
Most students at the Wilderness Medicine certification course weren’t MDs
but wilderness leaders of various kinds.
A WFR is a Wilderness First Responder. Tamar discussed what is needed in a WFR
first aid kit. You have to decide whether the person can walk out. She demonstrated
several ways of helping a person get ready to walk out, if they can.

Executive Committee, March 15, 2018
attendees:
Tamar Gottfried, Andy Zaharchuk, Monika Hahues, Jim Buyens, Ted Tenny
- Guest speakers for July 17 and September 18.
AI [Andy] → Prepare a talk on GPS and PLB devices for July 17.
AI [Tamar] → Contact “through hikers” about giving a
talk on September 18.
-
Whether to send signup sheets to Jim instead of Chuck.
Jim needs them for the names and miles hiked.
AI [Jim] → Contact Chuck to work out the details.
AI [Jim] → Include any changes in an announcement to the hike leaders.
-
Mutinous and spontaneous side trips.
People who rode with the mutineer shouldn’t have to wait a long time for
everyone to return. But if they all want to go along, that’s fine. It should
be in the hike description.
-
Submission of paperwork to the state, for our organization.
Bill Zimmermann will continue to do this.
-
Another lot of nominal club gifts.
We’re running out of whistles.
AI [Ted] → Contact Michael regarding whistles.
AI [Ted] → Notify Monika if more whistles have to be ordered.
AI [Monika] → Order more whistles, if they are needed.
-
Insurance/liability review.
Hike leaders need to be insured!
AI [Tamar] → Ask our insurance agent.
Recommend changes if need be.
-
Equipment swap/trade/sell arrangements among members.
This could be included in our annual awards potluck.
-
Facebook page.
The AZHC Facebook page serves only to direct people to our regular web page.
Ted is in favor of leaving it that way, because
• Whenever you have the same information in multiple places,
they get out of sync.
• He has enough to do maintaining our regular web page.
-
Two or more official meeting places.
Carpool drivers will have different distances. The closing of Starbuck’s in
Fountain Hills made that meeting place less convenient.
-
Shoe and water check.
Several hikers have failed to bring enough water on a long hike.
AI [Jim] → Send an email to the hike leaders reminding them to make
sure everyone is carrying enough water, and has adequate footwear.
-
Hikes full.
Ted is not clairvoyant. Hike leaders need to notify him when the hike is full.
Hikes and camping trips should remain on our web page, because they are
a record of what the club has done.
AI [Jim] → Remind hike leaders to notify Ted when the hike is full.
AI [Tamar] → Contact the hike leader regarding an recent incident.
-
Radios.
Some of our 2-way radios won't hold a charge. Ted carries his own radio, which
uses ordinary AA batteries, easy to change.
AI [Jim] → Remind hike leaders to bring club packs to the March 20 meeting.
