President [Tamar Gottfried] |
|
• |
The AZHC Awards hike will be on January 25, 2020, at South Mountain. |
• |
Does your hiking first aid kit need refreshing? Do you have enough ibuprofen
and bandages from the last administration? If not, pick up free supplies courtesy
of your Trailblazer officers. |
• |
Have you admired the Trailblazer logo swag that Jim or Tom or Tamar wears?
Do you prefer to buy your own stuff? If so, leave any shirts, hats, bandanas etc.
that you think would look nicer with an embroidered logo.
Pin your name to each item and I will take them to the shop to get a logo for $7 an
item. Check, cash, or zelle. If you write a check, make it to Tamar Gottfried.
I will bring the finished product to hikes or to next meeting. |
• |
We need for more people to step up and lead
"C" and "D" hikes. |
• |
Other topics were from the Executive Committee, November 4 (below). |
|

Guest Speaker: Rick Kamel
subject: After the Fall: My Helicopter Rescue
Rick is a flatlander from Grand Rapids, Michigan. He moved to Apache Junction in
1970. He often hikes alone, usually on trail.
He fell when climbing down from Turtlehead Peak in the Red Rock Wilderness
west of Las Vegas. Loose rocks rolled underneath his right boot.
The first thing he did was check for broken bones. There were some in his right leg
and foot. Fortunately he had ½ bar of cell phone service, so he called 911.
Men is a helicopter rescued him and took him to the hospital. When he got out,
driving home was a challenge, but he managed to operate the accelerator pedal
with a trekking pole. Recovery took six months.
Rick brought his emergency equipment and answered questions.

- AZHC Awards, 2020
The awards hike will be in South Mountain Park on January 25. We’ll hike the
Holbert Trail, which goes up to the towers. Equipment exchange will be included.
AI [Tamar] → Make up a description of this event.
- Ted out of action for a while
He is having shoulder surgery on December 13.
No driving or hiking until it’s healed.

AI [all] → Contact potential speakers for later in the year.
- Looks like we're losing vs. gaining members at almost a 3:1 ratio.

"C" hikes.

We need all the packs and all the radios there.
AI [Ted] → Make up a suitable announcement and send to Tamar for review.

Guest Speaker: Robert “Robby” Pacho
Subject: The Path Less Traveled
Robby wore out three pairs of boots hiking every marked trail in the Superstition
Wilderness. His favorite is the Spencer Spring Trail, northwest of Sawtooth Ridge.
It will take decades for the wilderness to recover from the Woodbury Fire. In a way
it’s good that there wasn’t much rain this monsoon season: fewer washouts.
Robby is Passage Steward of part of passage 19 of the Arizona Trail. Soon volunteers
will be needed to clean up the trail.
He hasn’t found the Lost Dutchman Mine.

|
Executive Committee, September 3, 2019
attendees: Tamar Gottfried, Andy Zaharchuk, Jim Buyens, Ted Tenny
- Unsolicited link requests
Our links are limited to hiking, camping, and Arizona.
If Ted is unsure about them, he can ask the other officers.
-
Hike Leader Training
Not needed at this time.
- Officers pay no club dues
Passed. Most officers are hike leaders who lead five or more hikes, so they
won’t have to pay anyway. It will begin with the officers for 2020.
- Online nonprofit filing
It can be done! Eliminates a lot of paperwork.
- Officers elections
We have candidates for President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary.
-
New radios: auctioning off the old ones?
The new radios will operate on high-power channels, so we won’t
auction off the old ones, which will become incompatible.
-
Using high power radio settings
The high-power settings are on different channels from the low-power settings.
AI [Andy] → Choose the channel and code, and draft a policy concerning
club-compatible radios.
-
Club retreat?
There is a retreat center in Pine that could be used.
AI [Tamar] → Plan a possible retreat.

Guest Speaker:
, Arizona Advocate for Leave No Trace
subject: Leaving No Trace
Beth is also a City of Phoenix Park Steward. The principles of
Leave to Trace are:
1. |
Know before you go. Plan ahead and prepare. |
2. |
Stick to trails and camp overnight right. |
3. |
Trash your trash and pick up poop. |
4. |
Leave it as you find it (except for removing trash, I’ll add). |
5. |
Keep wildlife wild. |
6. |
Share our trails and manage your pet. |
7. |
Be careful with fire. |
She gave us exercises in identifying how long various kinds of trash take to
decompose and identifying dog or wildlife scat by foreign substances. Questions
included hiking off trail (as to
King’s Crown Peak). Where there isn’t a trail hikers
shouldn’t follow each other, but separate.

4. | Uses standard batteries. |

AI [Jim] → Buy 500 of them and get reimbursement from the Treasurer.

Guest Speaker: Kelly Nalder
subject: Backpacking the Appalachian Trail
Kelly backpacked the Appalachian Trail from March 26 to October 10, 2018.
She wore out six pairs of hiking boots and almost stepped on a copperhead.
Two hiking companions were with her much of the way. The trail goes through
14 states, from Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine.
Unlike the Arizona Trail, you go up to every summit along the way.
