Where: Burnt Corral Campground, Apache Lake Why: Need to start the camping season Description: Burnt Corral Campground is located on the shore of Apache Lake in the Tonto National Forest. Trailblazers third kayak campout trip to Apache Lake. We will camp on the lakeshore meaning no hauling boats, allowing later alarm clocks for day trips, kayaking for sunrise or sunsets, or just take a swim or throw in a line. Hiking day, Cornhole contest, Potluck 2 nights and campfires. We will share 4 campsites reserved at USFS Burnt Corral Campground at Apache Lake. Anyone not signed up may need to reserve a campsite, especially if have camper, contact Norma first though. There are hotel rooms at Apache Lake Resort and surrounding Lake Roosevelt for those not wanting to camp. Day 1 drive up Sunday, set up camp, do an evening night kayak from shoreline campsites. Campfire. Day 2 kayak up the Salt River to Roosevelt Dam, stop along beach for lunch and return for total of 9 miles. Potluck and campfire tonight. Day 3 hike possibilities Reevis, Vineyard or Arizona Trail nearby. Fishing, swimming, lounging, cornhole contest. Potluck and campfire tonight. Day 4 Load kayaks up and drive to Crabtree Cove near marina and kayak western end of Apache Lake 10 miles. Campfire tonight. Day 5 break camp and drive home. Kayak Canyon Lake or hike on way home anyone? Or have lunch at Tortilla Flats? May adjust schedule due to weather or groups eagerness. Elevation is 1920' so don’t expect towering pine trees. Instead you will see the Arizona desert at its best: shady mesquite trees with stunning views of Apache Lake and the surrounding mountains. Amenities include picnic tables, potable water, fire rings, flushing toilets, and grills. Fires are allowed at this time: please contribute to firewood. Driving directions: Take US 60 east to Idaho Rd. exit. Go north (left) to Apache Trail (also known as Rt. 88). Stay on Apache Trail. You will pass Canyon Lake, drive through Tortilla Flat and over the bridge at Fish Creek. You will pass the Apache Lake Marina & Resort. From the Marina, it’s seven more miles to the campground. Turn left at the 236 mile marker and follow signs for Burnt Corral Campground. After the turnoff into the campground, there are campsites available on either side of the road. We are hoping to camp close to the lake on the left side. Carpooling is encouraged. Apache Junction path: The pavement ends shortly after Tortilla Flat. From there you will be driving on a maintained dirt road with winding, mountainous curves. In several places, the road narrows to single lane. Please drive carefully and do not plan on driving the road at night. Carpooling is encouraged. Travel Beeline Highway: 188 south to 88 and South to campground. From there you will be driving on a well maintained dirt road. A lot of Az-88 is paved from 188 to Apache Lake Marina. Travel 60 through Globe: 188 north to 88 and South to campground. From there you will be driving on a well maintained dirt road. A lot of Az-88 is paved from 188 to Apache Lake Marina. Required: Life Jacket and whistle At least 3 liters of water (may fill up at camp site) Dinners, Lunchs and snacks Hat, sunblock, sunglasses Recommended: Rain poncho Camera Change of dry clothes Camping gear distance 9-10 miles daily weather: Apache Junction Expect 70s-80s in the day, 40s-50s at night. Bring warm clothes and gear for nights. Cost: Share campground cost. Sharing gas expenses with the driver. The club also allows voluntary contributions of $5 per non-member.
