Grand Canyon National Park

Sunday, June 15, through Thursday 19, 2025

clipbord Trip Report : June 26-July 1, 2021

Couple of things to consider: Come with a flexible outlook on the agenda: things may change. Come prepared to have a good time.

Campground: North Rim Group Campsite C, Max three Vehicles at site. There are overflow parking lots for additional vehicles.
This trip is limited to 15 attendees.
The group campsite reservation is already made. The cost is $50 per night, four nights are $200, which will be split among those campers. We need to carpool to the North Rim. We need high clearance Vehicle for one of the drives. High Clearance vehicle carpooling has the priority to park at group campsites.
Day 1, Sunday, June 15, Meet at MacDonald’s (I-17 & Carefree Highway) parking lot. Caravan up together. Leave Phoenix by 8 AM.
Stop for lunch at Cameron Trading Post. We will stop at the Navajo Bridge Interpretive Center (restrooms), where we will walk across the bridge for a great view of Marble Canyon and look straight down on the Colorado River. Drive on to the North Rim and set up camp.
Day 2, Monday, June 16, Widforss Trail hike which goes out 5 miles for a 10-mile round trip. This is noted as one of the most scenic hikes in all Arizona in an Arizona Highways 2010 edition. Option to turn back earlier than the 10 miles, if there is a co-leader available.
Dinner: Potluck extravaganza.
Day 3, Tuesday, June 17
Hike option 1: challenging 9.4-mile round trip North Kaibab trail down to Roaring Springs and back. This hike has 3050 ft of elevation change. It’s a good introduction to hiking into the Grand Canyon. Figure on 5-7 hours.
Hike Option 2: In the morning, hike at Scenic Uncle Jim Trail which is a moderate five-mile loop trail near the rim with great views of Bright Angel Canyon and Roaring Springs Canyon. In the afternoon, Drive to Cape Royal and Point Imperial.
Dinner: Finish the potluck.
Day 4, Wednesday, June 18
Option 1: Drive to Point Sublime. Considered by many to be one of the most spectacular lookout points on the entire North Rim. We need 4x4 vehicle for this drive.
Option 2: Drive to Cape Royal and Point Imperial in the morning. In the afternoon, take a short hike to the North Rim Lodge on the Transept Canyon trail from the Campground. Take a short hike out to Bright Angel Point for the stunning canyon views and then return to the campground by way of the Transept Canyon trail.
Dinner: Dinner at North Rim Lodge, we need to make a reservation.
Day 5, Thursday, June 19, Pack up camp early. Drive back to Phoenix.
