Bismark Lake Day Hike

where? Flagstaff
the hike     This hike is part of passage 34 of the Arizona Trail that travels through the Ponderosa Pines and Aspen forests in the shadow of the San Francisco Peaks. This shady hike transverse along the westerly side of Mount Humphreys and skirts along Nature Conservancy Hart Praire Preserve before arriving at Bismarck Lake. Views of Kendrick Peak and Mount Humphreys are along the way. We will return the same way but on the way back we’ll take a short side trip on the upper portion of the Aspen Loop before returning to the parked vehicles at Aspen Corner.
    Passage 34 of the Arizona Trail is described on pages 256-262 of Arizona Trail: The Official Guide by Tom Jones and Jerry Sieve, Westcliffe Publishers, 2005.
    We will park vehicles at Aspen Corner which is on Snowbowl Road about 3/4 of the way up towards the Snow Bowl on the left side of the road.
    Bring rain gear. Monsoons have started and early afternoon showers can be expected almost daily. Sunscreen, 3 liters of water, trail snacks and food, hats, hiking poles, day pack.

meet 7:00 AM in the Fry’s parking lot on the SW corner of I-17 & Bell Road. Park behind Denny’s, near the entrance to the Deer Valley Park & Ride.
drive     Carpoolers will proceed to Flagstaff north on I-17 about 140 miles and will join up with hikers from Flagstaff at the Target parking at northeast corner of Milton Rd and University Drive (1650 S Milton Rd) at 9:00 AM.
    Then all will proceed to the parking area at Aspen Corner off the Snowbowl Rd. Directions to Aspen Corner will be provided at Target.
