the hike    The Kachina Trail takes a leisurely route on the south slopes of the San Francisco Peaks through the woods and meadows overlooking Flagstaff. The hike starts in a forest of fir, spruce, and aspen, through meadows of flowers, past basalt cliffs at 1.5 miles, and a cave, with a good chance we'll see and hear lots of wildlife: butterflies, birds, squirrels, elk, jays, and others.
We start from the Kachina Trailhead, walk the trail all the way to the east end. We’ll go to the Weatherford Trail junction and then turn around and hike back. Those wishing a shorter hike can turn around earlier.    There are no major climbs or descents, but the outbound leg will be generally downhill and the return leg back up. elevation 9,200 to 8,000 feet. No abrupt changes in altitude, but several ups and downs with two small scrambles. Hiking sticks are advised.
