|where||Grand Canyon National Park|
This will be a three-day car camping trip on the South Rim of the
Grand Canyon, with an option to stay at one of the lodges for those
who don’t want to camp out. We will drive up to the canyon on
Friday morning, set up camp at Mather Campground, and try to catch
a few viewpoints before dinner. On Saturday morning we will drive
to the trailhead and hike down the Bright Angel Trail, making rest
stops along the way at 1.5 Mile Resthouse, 3 Mile Resthouse, and
finally Indian Garden before making our way out to Plateau Point
overlooking the Colorado River, 1,260 feet below the point.
The club last did this hike in October, 2003, so this venture will
mark the ten-year anniversary of that trip.
This hike will not only be a tough and challenging workout hike,
but also a great introductory hike deep into the Grand Canyon for
those who have never experienced it before.
This is a hike you will not soon forget and may even whet your
appetite for a full backpacking trip later.
Water is available year around at Indian Garden, which is 4.6 miles from the trailhead, but may or may not be available at the two rest houses depending on freezing conditions at night. Typically by late October water to one or both rest houses will be shut off, so we each need to bring enough storage capacity with us to carry enough water to last from Indian Garden to the Rim, a hike that takes most people from 3 to 4 hours. So plan on taking plenty of water and plenty of food to snack on, especially for the hike back out where we will be burning up to 500 calories per hour. Restroom facilities are available at the trailhead, the 1.5 Mile Resthouse, and Indian Garden, but not at the 3 Mile Resthouse or Plateau Point.
On Sunday we’ll take the park shuttle out to Hermit’s Rest and work our way back, by way of hiking the Rim Trail or taking the shuttle between lookout points. By early afternoon we will plan on stopping for lunch at one of the lodges and then make the drive back home.
