the hike |
Rogers Lake is a high-elevation wetland located southeast of Flagstaff within
a Coconino County Park called Rogers Lake County Natural Area. The area is
important to numerous wildlife species and features views of the San Francisco
Peaks.
Until recently, this area had only two hiking trails, the longest of which was the Gold Digger Trail with a distance of four miles. Now, however, the county has added the Rogers Trail, a 6.1-mile connector that extends from the Gold Digger Trail to the Loop Trail and then Soldiers Trail in Fort Tuthill County Park. The route for this hike, therefore, will be to go half way around the Gold Digger Trail, hike three of four miles on the Rogers Trail, return, and then finish the Gold Digger Trail along the lake. While on the Rogers trail we’ll pass Woody Mountain, which should provide some extra scenery. Click here for a map. The trail shouldn’t be difficult. If persons want extra we will go up and back to the top of Woody Mountain. Hopefully the lake will have water in it. The county warns that it’s an, “ephemeral wetland” and may not have water year-round. Required: • Sturdy hiking boots • At least 3 liters of water • Rain poncho • Hat, sunblock, sunglasses Recommended: • Lunch or snacks • Binoculars • Camera |
