| the hike |
Come join me to burn some calories before summer officially starts.
If I can get a deputy hike leader, this will be both a C and a B hike.
The C hike is just the Highline Trail out to the junction with the Drew Trail.
We will be hiking just below the rim, and at breaks in the trees we
can see the Verde Valley.
The rim above us provides some nice views of the different rock formations.
There may be a few wildflowers out, depending on how the rains have gone.
At about the 4 mile point we will get to the Drew Trail and the C hikers will
return to 260 Trailhead. This is at 6,780 feet elevation.
Because this is an in and out hike, you can return to the trailhead from any
distance.
The B hike continues to the top of the rim on the Drew Trail. The Drew Trail is an old trail that the pioneers built before 1909. This trail gets to the top of the rim in one mile. It is a very steep and rocky trail. From the top you can see the Verde Valley. The wildflowers will now be “top of the rim” types. We end up at 7,600 feet in elevation. After the hike we may return to Payson for a meal and drinks. The two groups can then finish the day together. Required: • Sturdy hiking boots • At least 3 liters of water and a snack/lunch • Hat, sunblock, sunglasses • Walking sticks if doing the Drew Trail |
