Diving Board Sunset Hike
when Trip Report : October 29, 2016
where Sedona
the hike     Although Sedona is perpetually scenic, the wonder is further enhanced twice daily, at sunrise and sunset. The practical best option for our majority Phoenix area members is the latter, so will defy the usual convention and initiate this hike in the afternoon vs. our usual morning start.
Diving Board

Informally named, Diving Board is a red rock outcropping that overlooks AZ 179 on the northern edge of the Village of Oak Creek. From straight above it would adopt the geometry of an arrowhead. We will start our trek from the Yavapai Vista Trailhead and after brief interludes on connector trails use sections of the Slim Shady and Made in the Shade. Later, we will veer off onto an unmarked but maintained social trail which will lead to a second and more rugged detour leading us to our destination. Our return will be timed to coincide as the sun begins to set, with several opportunities to pause, view, and capture images all the way from Bell Rock to West Sedona that are unique this time of day.
Due to the later than usual conclusion of the hike (approximately 5:30 PM), no organized post-hike meal is currently anticipated in order to accommodate timely return travel. Because pre-hike dietary preferences are generally more diverse from person to person, it is suggested you ensure your individual nutritional requirements are provisioned before Phoenix carpool departure and during breaks on the hike.
