the hike |
As Billy G. from “That Little Ol’Band from Texas” expressed in their
song Lizard Life... I got the attitude And that’s all I ever say Don’t have to tell nobody How their tail ought to lay As demonstrated by the volume and variety of hikes and experiences offered by the Trailblazers over its long history changes in attitude can reflect changes in latitude. Perhaps in the same day with this Sedona trek. Although originating in the same vicinity as the Chimney Mocha hike from 2019, only a fraction of the distance will be on the same trails and direction as that previous excursion. This will be a one-way hike commencing at the informally named “Purcell” Trailhead (my abode) from where we will navigate social trails and bushwhack up a rappeler approach to a scenic area proximate to Coffee Pot. From there we will proceed to climb past Chimney Rock to the Lizard Head Trail, one of the more breathtaking in West Sedona (does not include ascent to Lizardhead Rock—that is perhaps a future goal). After crossing Dry Creek Road, a more sedate but undulating section including the Two Fences and Girdner Trails ending at the Girdner Trailhead with the relocated vehicles. Full disclosure, this hike will involve brief but steep ascents and descents on faint trails and ledge adventures but generally familiar challenges to experienced participants in “B” rated events. This may be the only hike available on this day of the year until 2024. |
