Transept Trail Day Hike

the hike	Of all the many trails that we’ve hiked in the Sedona area over the years, this one has somehow slipped through the cracks, probably because it’s one of the newer tracks in Red Rock Country. So, this will be a brand-new exploratory hike for the Arizona Trailblazers and a new one to add to our vast inventory of hikes.     The Transept Trail was recently described by Mare Czinar in one of her weekly hiking columns in The Arizona Republic. From her article, “…the north-south running ridge line known as the Seven Warriors is home to a pair of trails known for their edge-hugging exposure.” The Transept Trail is one of those two trails.     The Transept Trail traverses the less congested western side of the Seven Warriors ridge line. The first half mile of the trail makes a gradual, but steady, ascent through typical cypress-juniper woodlands, common to this area. Along this stretch of trail we’ll watch for the Mayan Maiden, one of the more interesting formations here.     Beyond this point the trail gets a bit more aggressive as it traverses across large expanses of slickrock and high-step climbs over red sandstone shelves with sections of loose rock rubble. At some point the trail gets very close to the edge with deep, sheer drop-offs, requiring utmost concentration and careful maneuvering. At some point the trail gets very close to the edge with deep, sheer drop-offs, requiring utmost concentration and careful maneuvering.     Along here we’ll also have totally unobstructed views of Cathedral Rock, House Mountain, and parts of Oak Creek Canyon. The Transept Trail ends at the 3.2-mile point where it connects with the Hiline Trail. We can end the hike here and turn back or consider making it a long loop hike. drive	•  Take I-17 north to SR179 (Exit 298). • Exit onto SR179 and continue north to the Village of Oak Creek for 7.2 miles from I-17. NOTE: Red Rock Passes are not required for this hike • At the second traffic roundabout in the Village of Oak Creek go left (west) onto Verde Valley School Road. • Continue driving on Verde Valley School Road for 2.1 miles to the unmarked dirt parking lot on the left side of the road. • Look for the Transept Trailhead across the road about 50 feet to your right.
