This is a hike though the Sonoran Desert.
We will start on a ridge line and follow it up to the Big Hill. The club did
the AZT passage 16 in previous years, so it’s time to go south.
On our left will be the Gila River, which is a strand of green though the
brown Sonoran Desert.
On our right will be the great expanse of the Sonoran Desert, which
continues to California.
The trail does not get to the summit of the big hill, so we can decide if
we want to go off trail and do the summit on the hike day.
We then continue on the AZ Trail to Ripsey Wash, where we will start the off-trail adventure. This wash will take us back to the Florence-Kelvin highway (dirt). In the wash we may come across wildlife. We will follow an old jeep road that mainly follows the wash. The wash may have cut though some interesting rock formations on its way to the Gila.
Once we get to the Florence-Kelvin highway, we will take it back to our cars. Afterwards we will stop at the Gila and check it out, and then if the group wants we can go to Kearny or Superior for food. Kearny is a very small town.
