Superior Railway Day Hike

where	Superstitions Mountains
the hike	We will be following the old rail line that was constructed at the start of WW I to move copper from Superior to Florence. This will be flat hike with at most a 1% grade, because that is the way railroads like it. Our turn-a-round point is a gulley where the old bridge may have failed. There is a craze lady that claims the land on the other side, so we will not go there. You will have to be able to step on the cross ties as we cross gullies. None of the bridges are high.     This will be a great time to view the open desert. Some late flower may be out. The desert will be green with all the rain we have had over the past month. Because the rail bed is above the desert, we may see some animals.     The weather may be sunny or not. Be prepared for extreme desert weather. Bring a hat, sunscreen and some rain gear. Even if it looks like rain, I will still do the hike. We may have a late lunch after the hike. Required: •  Sturdy hiking boots •  At least 3 liters of water •  Rain poncho •  Hat, sunblock Recommended: •  Hiking poles •  Camera

meet	8:00 AM at Home Depot in Mesa on the southeast corner of Power and US 60. Carpooling arrangements will be made here. For those leaving their vehicles behind, please park up against the southeast curb of the parking lot, next to Burger King. We will leave promptly at or before 8:15 AM.
drive	•  Take the Superstition Freeway to Queen Valley Road, where we will start. This is just before the rail line crosses US 60. • All roads are graded for cars. • 40 miles one way.
