Arizona Trail Passage 1 Day Hike
when November 30, 2025 Sunday
where Huachuca Mountains
the hike     John King is reaching a major personal goal this Sunday—he’s completing the last section of the Arizona Trail! Lets join him and celebrate this incredible accomplishment. And for anyone thinking about starting the AZ Trail yourselves—we are here for you! We love to support you as you take on Passage 1 and begin your own journey on this amazing trail.
I plan to drive down to Montezuma Pass AZT TH on Sunday, Nov 30. I will hike towards Miller Peak until I meet John coming down from his backpacking trip. We will then hike the last 1.8 miles, in and out, to the marker at the beginning of the trail.
At the southernmost point you have cholla cactus, agaves and expansive views of the San Rafael Valley – a unique Sonoran grassland environment. Your ascent continues along a rocky singletrack trail into the Huachuca Mountains, which are rich in cultural history, biodiversity, and inspiring views into Mexico northern state of Sonora.
The trail gains over 3,000 feet within the first six miles (We only do 1.8 miles) traveling from desert grassland to a conifer forest filled with fragrant ponderosa pines and Douglas fir trees. Here, in the higher elevations, it is not uncommon for snow to remain on the ground well into the spring months. We will drive down and back on the same day.
Donations to the Arizona Trail Association will be appreciated. Some federal funding for the National System of Scenic Trails has been eliminated.
