the hike |
This hike starts at the upper parking lot of Tortilla Flats. From here the trail follows Tortilla Creek for a short distance,
then climbs between two low hills and reenters Tortilla Canyon. We follow this canyon for about a mile, then take a hard right turn
into Peters Canyon. This very rugged and scenic canyon slowly ascends deeper into the Supes. Usually, there are is running water and
several deep pool along the way, which can be bypassed without getting wet. This year, I expect everything will be dry. After a mile or two,
we will reach a narrow gap and a cave on the right-hand side of the canyon. Years ago (perhaps 15 years?) an actual hermit was living in this cave.
Depending on conditions, we may try to go further up the canyon. If conditions are not favorable, this will be the turn around point.
Expect boulder hopping and some scrambling. The complete Peters trail may be a good backpack for a future spring time. Late lunch at Tortilla Flats afterwards if anyone interested. You will need: • gloves (sharp boulders and brush) • hiking stick • hiking boots with good traction • sunscreen • snacks • water (2 quarts at least) |
