Bill, Debbie, Tamar, Li, Tom, Andy, Chris

Seven hikers left the valley at 5:55 AM. We met Michele in Payson. Unfortunately a flat tire on the way to the trailhead caused her to miss the hike.

At 8:30 boots were moving. Rock-hopping and dodging downed trees was the norm and made for an expectedly slow trudge. However the dead fall was not so intense as to cause us to turn around. We saw Columbine and Wild Roses.

Log-hopping.  Tom shows us how it’s done.

Lots of debris in Deer Lake Canyon.

This seems to be the way.
rock
A giant staircase.  Is this our way out?
Chris
I like this part of the canyon.
hikers
Which way do we go from here, Bill?
hikers
This ’a way.
hikers
All right if you say so.

After waypoint “4” the rocks got bigger and canyon walls got higher. It was near 11:30 when we realized we might not be able to finish the planned route. We started looking for a way out. At waypoint “5” we headed up the draw until it was choked, full of brush. Heading up the steep slope to our right got us into the pines.

Tamar
Hmmm, let’s see here.
Tamar
Now I’ve got it!
hikers
You said there would be bushwhacking.
view
We get a grand overview here.

The view from the top.
road
We found a road.

At “NR2” we came upon a road. We hiked the road east to see if we could get a glimpse of Chevelon Canyon. We returned on FR 180a back to the cars.

Macky's
Bring on the food!

After grub at Macky’s Grill in Payson, we returned to the Valley and its 108° temperature.

8.1miles, -+1100 feet.
