As we started up Bluff Springs trail, all of us immediately noticed the unseasonable heat. The temps cooled and a nice breeze began as we gained elevation.

We visited Geronimo Cave, then Lone Pine overlook, where we found a large group of campers.

From Lone Tree we descended into Upper Barks Canyon, which is full of massive hoodoo formations, most of them 40 to 50 feet high. The trail through this area was sometimes a bit tricky to find. From the Geronimo Cave ridge we were able to see large numbers of hikers on Peralta Trail. Fortunately, we met very few hikers on our route, with the exception of the Lone Tree group. On the negative side, the Supes are very dry, as dry as I can recall in the last 20 years.
