Hike at Wood Canyon Lake felt like a gift after weeks of unseasonably hot weather. Going from 105 in the valley to a refreshing 54 at the
trailhead was incredible one of those moments where you instantly feel happier just stepping out of the car.

Nine of us met at Target on Shea Blvd in Fountain Hills at 7:00 AM. As we gathered and signed in, we could not help but notice how dusty and hazy the air
looked in the valley. A quick check of the weather app during the drive confirmed a wind advisory for eastern and southeastern Arizona, which explained the
conditions. Even when we reached the Mogollon Rim, the views were still hazy, creating a soft, almost foggy landscape.
Despite everything, we were glad to be going somewhere cooler and cleaner.

Wood Canyon Lake has always been one of our club favorite spots for hiking and kayaking. Typically, we visit in May, so this early-season trip felt a bit
unusual. Normally, Forest Road 300 does not open until April 1 due to winter conditions, but this year dry and warm weather meant no snow and earlier access
than expected.

After a quick group photo, we hit the trail in no time. The mood was light and cheerful—everyone was enjoying the perfect hiking temperature and the peaceful
forest setting. This trail never disappoints, with its beautiful lake views, shaded paths, and relaxing atmosphere. And as always, the best part was the great
company.

We took plenty of breaks along the way for photos. Robert and Li even had some fun attempting log balance walks, adding a bit of laughter to the day.
About half a mile before returning to the trailhead, Bud, Robert, Tom, and Li Li decided to explore a side trail toward FR 300, while Lin and the rest of the
group continued to complete the loop around the lake. After arriving back at the trailhead, Ron and Lin drove to FR 300 to pick up our lost kids, while
Sun-King, Jennifer, and Wendy headed to a vista point to wait for us and continue with more hiking along the Rim Trail.
With the temperature still very pleasant, we added another 1.3 miles along the Rim Trail. Once everyone regrouped at the vista parking area, Ron decided
to head home, while the remaining eight of us continued the adventure—this time toward lunch.

We stopped at Macky Grill, located off SR 87. It is a spot we have visited many times and always enjoys the great food, relaxed patio seating, and quieter
atmosphere on a Saturday afternoon. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the meal, and Bud even mentioned he’d like to come back again.
Perfect weather, a beautiful trail, and happy friends this Saturday truly felt like one of those perfect days. Thank you to everyone who joined the hike. I
am looking forward to seeing you all again soon, whether on the trail or at our next club meeting.
