I am excited to inform you that I would like to do a backpacking trip near Hoover Wilderness - Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest California.

The Hoover Wilderness area lies to the east of the crest of the central Sierra Nevada in California, to the north and east of Yosemite National Park - a long strip stretching nearly to Sonora Pass on the north and Tioga Pass on the south. Established as a primitive area in 1931 and later designated in 1964 as protected Wilderness, the Hoover Wilderness is widely known for its extreme mountainous terrain, glistening alpine lakes, and lush meadows. With steep terrain that ranges from around 7,000 feet (2,133 m) to more than 12,000 feet (3,657 m), the wilderness has forested areas and a landscape of granite basins, rugged canyons, and jagged peaks.

Total trip length is 7 days, including one day to drive to hotel near the trailhead and one day to drive home to the Phoenix area. The total hiking miles will be 34.6 miles and elevation gain 2,700 (point to point). However, the total aggregate elevation gain (Including all ups and downs) will be more like 4,200 feet. See the following itinerary.

Day 1: Drive from Phoenix area to a hotel in Bishop CA (592 miles, 8.5 hrs. drive time).
Day 2: Drive to the Leavitt Meadows Trailhead (2 hours). Hike to Fremont Lake. (Distance of 8.0 miles and elevation gain of around 1,100 feet.
Day 3: Continue on to Cinco Lake (Distance of 5.5 miles and elevation gain of about 1,000 feet
Day 4: Hike to Dorothy Lake (Distance of 4.7 miles and elevation gain of 600 feet)
Day 5: Return to Fremont Lake by a different route (Distance of 8.4 miles)
Day 6: Return to Leavitt Meadows (Distance of 8.0 miles) and drive to hotel in Bishop CA.
Day 7: Drive back to the Phoenix area.

Come prepared to have a great time. September should be a great time to backpack around the Hoover Wilderness area. Days are usually mild and sunny. High temperatures in the 60s and 70s with low temperatures in the 40s and 30s. Another benefit of September is a significant reduction in mosquito activity. Camping will be at large in the wilderness. Water should be plentiful along the route from perennial streams and lakes. There is no potable water at the trailhead or anywhere within the wilderness. All water must be treated before drinking. Bring you water filter. Black bears are common throughout Sierra mountains, including the Hoover Wilderness. All food must be stored in bear- proof canisters. You will be responsible for buying/renting and using bear canisters for food storage.

This is an A rated backpack trip. Hikers must have the required experience and ability to do this backpack trip, and must have the trip leader approval to sign up for the trip.

Cost: $10 per person. Other costs (gas, food, hotels, etc.) will be the responsibility of each hiker. Carpooling arrangements will be made at a later time.
