The trip I am excited to let you know about 2 backcountry camping and hiking trips to the Maze District of Canyonland National Park. A remote location accessible only by high clearance, low range 4WD vehicles, the Maze is the least visited district of Canyonlands. The Maze is known for its unique geological formations, including numerous sandstone spires and fins, entrenched canyons, and sheer-walled cliffs. Although the scenery is spectacular, hiking is very challenging. Unmarked and unmaintained trails (routes) weave up and over canyons with steep slickrock slopes, large boulders, high slickrock benches, and sheer drop-offs. These routes are more of a lesson in rock climbing as they twist through the steep rugged terrain which requires climbing up or down using small handholds carved in the slickrock.
