the hike     This is a variation of the Sunset Trail to Mt. Elden summit, avoiding the crowded trail that goes directly to the summit. We’ll begin this hike at the Arizona Trail/ Sandy Seep Trailhead, and connect to the Heart Trail, taking it to the summit. We will be hiking through some burned forest (not bad). We will then pick up the Sunset trail.
Our return will be on the Elden Lookout Trail, then Sunset Trail, then Heart trail onto the Sandy Seep Trail (AZT), then south back downhill to the Sandy Seep Trailhead.
If two or more hikers want a shorter hike, you can return to the trailhead on the Elden Lookout Trail, which is 10 miles. No solo hikers for this option.
This is monsoon season, so bring rain gear. If there is lighting we will start down then.
