the hike |
This will be a day trip on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. We will drive up to the canyon on Friday evening.
On Saturday morning we will drive to the trailhead and hike down the Bright Angel Trail, making rest stops along the way
at 1.5 Mile Resthouse, 3 Mile Resthouse, and finally Havasupai Garden (old name Indian Garden) before making our way out to
Plateau Point overlooking
the Colorado River, 1,260 feet below the point. This hike will not only be a tough and challenging workout hike, but also
a great introductory
hike deep into the Grand Canyon for those who have never experienced it before. This is a hike you will not soon forget and may
even whet your appetite for a full backpacking trip later.
Water is available year around at Havasupai Garden, which is 4.6 miles from the trailhead, but may or may not be available at the two rest houses depending on freezing conditions at night. Typically by late October water to one or both rest houses will be shut off, so we each need to bring enough storage capacity with us to carry enough water to last from Havasupai Garden to the Rim, a hike that takes most people from 3 to 4 hours. So plan on taking plenty of water and plenty of food to snack on, especially for the hike back out where we will be burning up to 500 calories per hour. Restroom facilities are available at the trailhead, the 1.5 Mile Resthouse, and Indian Garden, but not at the 3 Mile Resthouse or Plateau Point. You can leave immediately after the hike or depart on Sunday morning please text leader before leaving so we will know that you are safe and sound. Required: • Sturdy hiking boots • At least 2 liters down 3 liters up of water • Hiking poles • Rain poncho • Hat, sunblock, sunglasses Recommended: • Lunch or snacks • Camera • CKnee braces |
