the hike     Join me on this loop hike that is part of the Wickiup Trail System that was completed in the spring of 2018 developed and maintained by the Beaver Creek Trails Coalition. This trail system stretches across nearly 700 acres of National Forest land. We will start at the Golden Gulch Trailhead where views to the north offer a section of Humphrey’s Peak in Flagstaff and to the south eventually leading to a bench overlooking Montezuma Well.
The area’s ranching history is now part of the Walker Basin Grazing Allotment established in 1907 and operated by the V Bar Ranch. At 1.9 miles the Elmore Wash Trail intersects the Sunset East Trail. The group will make a right turn (west), proceed another .4 miles and end up with startling views above Montezuma Well. The hikers will turn around and head east onto the Sunset North Rim Trail for approximately .8 of a mile, go past signs for the Golden Gulch and Mallard Trails and complete the loop on the Sunset South Trail that connects with the Elmore Wash Trail. The Elmore Wash trail that will eventually lead the hikers to the cars after 1.8 miles.
