If a leader leads 5 or more hikes in a calendar year, the leader doesn’t have to pay dues the following year, regardless of when they are due. • Elections (November 17 AZHC meeting) We have candidates for all four elected offices: President: Lin Chao, VP: Michael Humphrey, Treasurer: Tom Simonick, Secretary: Ted Tenny. • Other topics are from the Executive Committee on September 1. Many trails date from the 1900s, when people walked from place to place the easiest way. OTC’s trails synchronize with the environment as much as possible, requiring minimal maintenance and sparing customers time and money on reconstruction and repair.     100 railroad ties were removed from Echo Canyon.     Switchbacks are staggered, so people won’t be tempted to shortcut them.     There isn’t a excessively steep section on an OTC trail. Treasurer’s Report Currently the club has 134 members. Only four members have dropped their memberships since March. The club checking account has $7493.70 Credit for deputy leaders A deputy leader gets only ½ credit. This is because the hike leader does all the paperwork. Incident Three people got lost recently. Fortunately they stayed together. Michelle made a good case for establishing a rendezvous and then driving in caravan to the destination. Statistician Several names were mentioned. Mesa, AZ 85202 Welcome, Introductions Reports President [Michelle Jelsma] •  Tamar visited La Casa de Juana and found it unsuitable for club meetings. • First Aid supplies for hike leaders will be brought to the July 16 AZHC meeting. • Backpacking equipment has been donated to the club. We made a donation in the amount of $100.00 to the Nature Conservancy in memory of Barbara French. The principles of Leave to Trace are: 1.  Know before you go. Plan ahead and prepare. 2. Stick to trails and camp overnight right. 3. Trash your trash and pick up poop. 4. Leave it as you find it (except for removing trash, I’ll add). 5. Keep wildlife wild. 6. Share our trails and manage your pet. 7. Be careful with fire.      She gave us exercises in identifying how long various kinds of trash take to decompose and identifying dog or wildlife scat by foreign substances. Questions included hiking off trail (as to King’s Crown Peak). Where there isn’t a trail hikers shouldn’t follow each other, but separate. Next Meeting Tuesday, July 17, 2020, Goody’s, 6:00 PM Executive Committee, May 14, 2020 attendees:  Tamar Gottfried, Andy Zaharchuk, Jim Buyens, Ted Tenny Location of AZHC meetings. For many years the club met at Top Shelf on Southern east of Dobson in Mesa. Then the restaurant closed. Now it is open again under new management as La Casa de Juana. We don’t know what changes have been made. AI [Tamar] → Find out whether it’s suitable for club meetings. 2-way Radios. There are not enough. Should be four in each of the club’s packs. We need to buy a dozen more. Some criteria: 1.  Lightweight. 2. Rugged. 3. Long range. 4. Uses standard batteries. 5. Long battery life. AI [Andy, Jim] → Recommend which kind of radio to buy. Charitable Donations. The club is donating $100 to the Nature Conservancy in honor of Barbara French. AI [Andy] → Make the donation and get reimbursement from the Treasurer. First-Aid Supplies. In the meantime, the club will sponsor hikes in which the individuals meet at the trailhead instead of carpooling. The club will no longer measure carpooling. Limit of 10 participants. AI [Michelle] → Compose a suitable email. Hikes by Chuck Parsons on May 2 and by Mark Purcell on May 9. They can go on, subject to the restrictions. May 19 meeting. Cancelled. Be at South Mountain at 8:00 AM. • The club will have hike leader training in March, after Ted recovers. • Other topics are from the Executive Committee, January 13. The primary expense in the last month was $250 for gift cards to be awarded at the Annual Awards Potluck. Webmaster [Ted Tenny] I had rotator cuff surgery of my right shoulder on December 13, 2019. Recovery is slow, but I’m going to physical therapy and will make a comeback. Many thanks for your prayers and kind thoughts.
