If you would like to get out of hot Phoenix, come join me on the Mogollon Rim.
Wild, expansive vistas await us on this drive and walk along the Mogollon
Rim. Start on the east side, because there is restrooms on that side. This is
a drive along the Rim road from east to west. We will stop at many pull outs and hike
for 0 to 2 miles per stop. The total for the day will be 6 to 10 miles of hiking. Per ADOT the Rim road is passable for cars.
but we need SUVs or better. The Rim road is known to have bad ruts is some spots. I will have my truck, but it is over kill for this road.
Our first stop will be the General Crook trailhead parking that has restrooms. Our second stop will be
Military Sinkhole vista pull out.
We will then continue along the Rim road to the next good spot. We will cross the Arizona trail at
General Crooks cabin after a few stops.
Come prepared for sunshine, clouds, rain,
pleasant breezes, and inspiring scenery of the Zane Grey country. We may stop for a
late lunch in Payson afterwards. I will have a small cooler for lunch, drinks or snacks for on the road.

7:00 AM in the parking lot of
Target Center on the south side of Shea Blvd., about a mile
west of Highway 87 (Beeline). For those leaving their cars behind, please park
up against the northernmost curb facing Shea Blvd. opposite the Target store.

Take the Beeline Highway (Arizona 87) north to Payson. |

Turn right and go east on Arizona 260. |

Drive east 29 miles, past Kohls Ranch to the top of the Mogollon Rim. |

Take the first left turn, on FR 300, toward Woods Canyon Lake. |

Go west a quarter mile to Rim Top Trailhead, where the hike begins. |
