Arizona Trailblazers Hiking Club
Calderwood Butte Day Hike
when Trip Report : February 15, 2022
where Peoria
the hike     I don’t think this club has hiked Calderwood Butte yet, but it’s about time we do! Most people only do the 1.5 mile loop listed in AllTrails, but we will get some more mileage in and hike all 4.7 miles of this preserve. It is in a residential neighborhood, but does have some nice 360 degree views on top. The route has lots of gradual switchbacks, a nice mix of uphill and downhill for a decent workout, and we will walk beneath and beside some sheer cliffs. It is fairly rocky with loose rocks in some places, so a hiking pole is recommended.
We will first hike the first half of the loop up to the butte, then we will do the north spur trail out and back, then continue on the other half of the loop, and do the south spur trail out and back, before heading back to the trailhead on the main trail.
The butte is named for Captain M.H. Calderwood, caretaker of a nearby stagecoach station (Coldwater Station) in the late 1800s.
Afterwards, if there is enough interest, we could have a picnic lunch at nearby Paloma Community Park, so bring your lunch if you’d like. It is a nice new 85 acre park that includes a fishing pond and other family friendly amenities. (Note: A class U Urban Fishing License is required to fish in the lake, which you can get from AZ Game & Fish).
