This hike will be a climb to the summit of Superstition Mountain.
This peak is also known as 5057 by virtue of its elevation.
It is the highest peak in the western Superstitions.
Elevation gain during the hike will exceed 3000 feet, greater than that gained
when hiking the Flatiron, exceeding by 1 1/2 times that of hiking Picketpost,
and more than 2 times that of hiking Picacho Peak. Upon reaching the peak,
magnificent views in all directions can be expected.
Along the way, especially at the saddle where the Hieroglyphic and Ridgeline
Trails join, outstanding views will be experienced in various directions,
including looking directly down upon Weaver’s Needle.
The hike will follow the Hieroglyphic Trail considerably beyond the location of the petroglyphs, all the way up and to the saddle, where it meets with the Ridgeline Trail. From there, the Ridgeline Trail will be taken towards the southeast, until the location is reached where cairns will be followed, on to the top of Superstition Mountain, 5057'.
This adventure is for experienced hikers. The upper part of Hieroglyphic Trail has steep slopes with loose stones and areas with scree. There are places on this hike with slopes approaching 30 degrees. If rain or thunderstorms become likely, the hike will be cancelled or rescheduled.
The hike leader has not hiked this prior, so the hike is exploratory. At the top, on the Ridgeline, we can frolic and adventure some, prior to heading down. We will also take a snack break at the top of Peak 5057 and enjoy the scenery around us.
