|when||August 14, 2023 Monday|
|where||Upper Lake Mary SE of Flagstaff|
This will be the Arizona Trailblazers first kayak to the Lake Marys.
With such a wet winter the Lake Marys are full, an unusual sight in recent years.
We will take advantage and paddle the narrow 5 mile long Upper Lake Mary set among
ponderosa pines and meadows. Upper Lake Mary is the largest of the twin Lake Marys
at 450 acres when full.
Starting from Narrows Boat Launch near the middle of the lake, we’ll head left and explore the SE section of this narrow lake. Making a loop along the shoreline we will then take lunch break at the Narrows Picnic Area in grove of trees with picnic tables and restrooms. After break we will paddle the other half of lake heading right to explore the NW section and dam area. Expect to see herons and possibly osprey and eagles diving for fish. As this is high country be prepared for strong hot sun, rain showers and changing temperatures.
Starting from the narrows allows paddling a figure-8 with halfway point for lunch being picnic area near our cars, available if weather turns unfavorable. After kayaking join me at a restaurant in Flagstaff if desire, before driving back to the valley.
