Arizona Trailblazers Hiking Club
Duck Pond Loop Day Hike
when Trip Report : June 11, 2022
where Flagstaff
the hike     This hike will cruise through the Ponderosa pine forest just south of Flagstaff. We will follow a series of trails to complete a 10.2 mile loop. Meet at an easy to find but informal trailhead and set out southeast on Flagstaff Loop Trail and then connect and head east on Skunk Canyon Trail.
This section of trail follows a grassy bottom canyon flanked by gently rolling hills of Ponderosa pine trees. We will reach a narrow and enchanting little part of the foresty canyon before popping out and connecting onto the Arizona Trail where we will turn north. At the halfway point, we will take a quick snack break.
Continuing north, we will reach Duck Pond at the 7 mile mark where we will take another little snack break and enjoy a view of the pond. From here, turn southwest onto the Bow and Arrow Trail. We will pass by a small formal trailhead and then pass through a small tunnel and connect onto the final leg of our hike, the JWP Trail (JW Powell) and arrive back at our starting point.
Be sure to bring 3 liters of water, hat, sunscreen and snacks.

drive
•  Take I-17 toward Flagstaff. Do not go into Flagstaff.
Just before reaching Flagstaff, take the Lake Mary Road exit 339.
At the bottom of the exit ramp when you reach the stop sign, look ahead and slightly to the right and you will see a Circle K gas station across from you. Use this location to fuel your car (good gas price for Flagstaff), grab a snack and use the restrooms.
From the Circle K turn, left onto Lake Mary Road (or if you didn’t stop at Circle K, turn right from the bottom of the exit ramp onto Lake Mary Road).
Travel 1.1 miles south on Lake Mary Road until you come to a T intersection with JW Powell Blvd. The informal trailhead is on the south east corner of this intersection, some logs serve as parking bumpers. There are no restrooms at the trailhead.
