the hike |
This hike will cruise through the Ponderosa pine forest just south of Flagstaff.
We will follow a series of trails to complete a 10.2 mile loop. Meet at an easy to find
but informal trailhead and set out southeast on Flagstaff Loop Trail and then connect
and head east on Skunk Canyon Trail.
This section of trail follows a grassy bottom canyon flanked by gently rolling hills of Ponderosa pine trees. We will reach a narrow and enchanting little part of the foresty canyon before popping out and connecting onto the Arizona Trail where we will turn north. At the halfway point, we will take a quick snack break. Continuing north, we will reach Duck Pond at the 7 mile mark where we will take another little snack break and enjoy a view of the pond. From here, turn southwest onto the Bow and Arrow Trail. We will pass by a small formal trailhead and then pass through a small tunnel and connect onto the final leg of our hike, the JWP Trail (JW Powell) and arrive back at our starting point. Be sure to bring 3 liters of water, hat, sunscreen and snacks. |
