Iron Springs/ Frog Tank Day Hike
when October 26, 2024
Trip Report : July 13, 2019
where Munds Park
the hike     Join me on this hike that is guaranteed to display bright fall colors of the Gamble Oaks. This trail is in a section of the Coconino National Forest 20 miles south of Flagstaff that is part of the Munds Park Trail System. This is a moderate out-and back hike that begins at the Iron Springs Trailhead and follows the Iron Springs Connector to the Frog Tank Loop junction.
At the junction go right and follow the trail downhill where it crosses a drainage with Wild Bergamot and tiny pools. At .2 miles from the Frog Tank Junction, the trail meets a 3 way-intersection where we will continue straight onto Leap Frog Trail #246. At the 1.5-mile junction the trail connects with the Frog Tank Loop. We will make a scenic detour, head left and make a .04-mile round-trip trek to Frog Tank. This spot is a watering hole for waterfowl including ducks, birds, elk and domestic cattle. We will continue going north on FR 246 across to Forest Service Road 78A that begins a moderate climb through the Horse Park Forest thinning project.
The Coconino National Forest logging project is part of an effort to reduce fire danger by removing fuels, restoring habitats and improving forest health. Cut trees and log piles will be visible along this segment where we will eventually reach the end of FR 78A, our lunch spot. Silhouettes of Mormon Mountain (8,456 ft.) and Apache Maiden Mountain (7,307 ft.) peaks can be viewed among tall Ponderosa pines. We will head back to the cars.
This is monsoon season, so bring rain gear.
