Arizona Trailblazers Hiking Club
Tonto Trail Exploratory Day Hike
when Sunday, November 20, 2022
where Grand Canyon
the hike     This will be a day trip on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. We will drive up to the canyon on Saturday evening after short hike at Williams. On Sunday morning we will drive to the trailhead and hike down the South Kaibab Trail, making rest stops at Cedar Ridge, Skeleton Point, then The Tipoff. From there, we will turn onto the Tonto Trail and hike to Indian Garden. On the Tonto Trail we will be able to enjoy a view of the bottom of the canyon and get 360° views, surrounded by Mother Nature’s great creation.
We will take a lunch break at Indian Garden and get water, then go up to 3 Mile Resthouse, followed by 1.5 Mile Resthouse passing through two tunnels, and finishing at the Bright Angle Trailhead. The club has never done this hike, so it is an exploratory hike. This trail is well traveled so don’t be surprised to see people on this hike. This hike will not only be a tough and challenging workout hike, but also a great introductory hike deep into the Grand Canyon for those who have never experienced it before. This is a hike you will not soon forget and may even whet your appetite for a full backpacking trip later.
Water is available year around at Indian Garden, which is 4.6 miles from the Bright Angle Trailhead, but may or may not be available at the two rest houses, depending on freezing conditions at night. Typically by late October water to one or both rest houses will be shut off, so we need to bring enough water to last from South Kaibab to Indian Garden then from Indian Garden to Bright Angel Trailhead. The hike takes most people from 7 to 9 hours. So plan on taking plenty of water and plenty of food to snack on, especially for the hike back out where we will be burning up to 500 calories per hour. Restroom facilities are available at Cedar Ridge, The Tipoff, Indian Garden, and the 1.5 Mile Resthouse.
On Monday morning we will drive back home.
