The Barbershop Trail (#91) and the UBAR Trail (#28) are part of the Coconino National
Forest’s Cabin Loop Trail system on Arizona’s Mogollon Rim. Once part of
a network of trails used by early ranchers and the Forest Service, the route of the historic
Barbershop and UBAR Trails are designated by blazes (notches) cut into the bark of trees
and Cabin Loop System trail markers.
The Barbershop trail derives its name from a local sheepherder who had a talent for shearing sheep and cutting the hair of his fellow herders. The trail begins at the historic Buck Springs Cabins, one of three cabins built by the Forest Service as housing for fire crews. The first cabin was built around 1904, the second in 1923, and the last in 1946 but only the two newer cabins remain. The larger of the two is still used occasionally as a ranger outpost. A short distance downstream from the cabins, the waters of Buck Springs are impounded by a concrete dam. The trails meander through a pleasant region of open forests and shallow canyons. There is a wide variety of tree species, including maple, aspen, and oak, scattered among Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. We climb a short incline and cross FR 137. Crossing the road, we descend into Yeager Canyon traveling up a fire road before dropping down a series of switchbacks to a stream crossing at the bottom of the canyon. We will pause for some photos before ascending the other side of the canyon crossing another fire road. We reach a small plateau and pause in a small glade to catch our breath and take a group picture. We proceed along the plateau and cross FR 321. Traveling about ¼ mile farther we reach the junction with the UBAR Trail We turn northeast on the UBAR Trail. After a short climb, we cross a plateau strewn with fallen logs, crossing FR 321C along the way. We drop into Dane Canyon and follow the watercourse to Dane Springs and the remains of a cabin. We will break for a snack and exploration on the rocks overlooking the canyon before returning via the same route. |
