Still to this day (miraculously) one of the better kept secrets in Sedona,
is a challenging destination but still accessible to most seasoned hikers. Due to the
closing of a carpool staging area, the Yavapai Vista Trailhead in the 2016 club hike
may be too crowded to accommodate our quantity of vehicles, but I have another
access point to the goal.
We will meet near the Red Agave Resort in the Village of Oak Creek with on-street parking. Adjacent to the Resort is the start of the Slim Shady trail, and from there we will transition to Made in the Shade and eventually veer off onto a unmapped social trail to the Diving Board. Unlike those of you on the 2016 version may remember, we will see the Diving Board almost immediately upon initiation. It will appear to be inaccessible, but not to worry—I will get you there!
Please note the social trail may be somewhat overgrown in segments, as well as having areas that are rocky and uneven with modest ledges. We should be back to the trailhead by early afternoon to get Valley participants on their way home before the height of the Flagstaff rush.
If you are planning to attend the Crook Trail club hike on April 2 with Victoria, perhaps make a weekend of it? An optimal motel or AirBnB staging area would be Camp Verde or Rimrock which are within 30 minutes of the trailhead for both hikes. Otherwise, viable for a day trip as the Diving Board origin will avoid traffic congestion in the Sedona area.
