Six-Shooter Canyon Day Hike

where Pinal Mountains south of Globe
the hike     The Six-Shooter Canyon trail is located about ten miles south of Globe in the scenic Pinal Mountains. This is a challenging hike, comparable to Mt. Humphreys in both distance and elevation gain, but without the ultra thin air and altitude sickness encountered by many on Arizona's highest mountain peak. Our highest elevation on this hike is a full 5,000 feet below that of Mt. Humphreys, but we will gain 2,800 feet of elevation along the trail. The trail follows a southwesterly direction and parallels a usually dry creekbed for a distance, before encountering a series of switchbacks and creek crossings, as it works its way up the northeastern slope of the range.
Starting out in a high desert vegetation zone of chaparral and oak, we will eventually start hiking among juniper, pine, fir, and even some aspen, as we slowly gain elevation up the mountainside. After about 1.5 miles, we will traverse a steep ridgeline and be rewarded with spectacular views of the towns of Globe and Miami far below. At the 3.5-mile point the trail transitions into a long abandoned logging road and soon passes by a flooded mine shaft. Bear left, staying on Trail #197 and the logging road, at the junction with Trail #192 (Telephone Trail). The trail terminates at Ferndell Spring, just beyond the Upper Pinal Recreation Area & Campground. We will stop and have lunch at the picnic tables in the campground, before returning on the same trail.

drive
•  Proceed on US 60 through Florence Junction, Superior, and Miami, to Globe.
In Globe turn right (southeast) on Hill St./Jess Hayes Rd., which soon becomes FR 222 – Six-Shooter Canyon Road – and watch for the signs to the Pinal Mountain Recreation Area.
About 2.5 miles from Globe, Forest Service Road #112 (Icehouse Canyon Rd.) intersects with FR 222. From here, bear right on FR 112 and proceed about 5 miles to the Icehouse Canyon Picnic Area on the left side of the road.
The last mile is unpaved, but usually graded and navigable by passenger car. Watch for the parking area just before reaching a small bridge. To access the trailhead, walk about fifty feet past the bridge and look for the Trail #197 sign to the right. I will pass out maps to all drivers at the meeting location.
