|where||Tonto National Forest, south of Superior|
Trailblazers, led by Bill Zimmerman, did this hike on
March 9, 2013.
Trail begins a few miles south of Superior on the west side of highway
177. We start south on an old road, then go due west to Wood Canyon.
The last time I did this trail (Dec 10, 2019), there was an interesting yucca forest here. I am not sure if this area survived the Telegraph fire of June 2021. We proceed south in Wood canyon for several miles, then cut southeast over a ridge that overlooks White Canyon, which is very scenic here.
The first Trailblazers expedition explored deep into White Canyon, where several pools needed to be waded. In 2019, we skirted this part of the canyon by taking a more northerly track, and going up and down a few ridges. Once clear of the ridges, we hike northeast and then north back to our cars through a side canyon.
About half of this hike will be off-trail, with the rest on seldom-used game trails. I am rating this hike as a solid "A" for length and off-trail hiking.
Dinner afterwards in Superior for any who are interested.
