Lookout Mountain Preserve is a municipal park in the northern part of Phoenix and is part
of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve system of parks.
In north Phoenix, Lookout Mountain looms as a very recognizable form rising from the valley floor to an elevation of 2,054'. Though not as high as Camelback 2,707' or Piestewa Peak 2,610', Lookout Mountain Summit Trail offers enough up hill chugging and even a short scramble to reach the top for a 360° view of the valley. Lookout Mountain is always one of the peaks included in the Phoenix Summit Challenge event, which takes place every November. Hikers sign up to conquer 7, 5 or 4 summits in one day. We will not however be taking the Summit Trail on this hike, but instead will hike the circumference of each of the 4 individual hills which comprise this park. There are short ups and downs, which can be rocky, so hiking poles are recommended. Billie Horn will lead this hike. |
