Horton Springs Day Hike
Tonto National Forest
November 6, 2021
by Rodney Baba

Seven hikers met early Saturday morning for a fall color hike to Horton Springs and carpooled to the trailhead.

The parking lot was full, so we had to park in the Derrick Trailhead parking, adding ¼ mile to the hike.

Rod reviewed hiking etiquette and safety protocols to ensure that everyone had a safe hike. Also assured the group to be vocal about photo opportunities and rest stops.

After a short descent to the creek bed, we came to a creek crossing. The crossing was dry, and it appeared the water level had dropped in the last two weeks.

For 2 miles we walked leisurely among the pine and sycamores growing beside the creek. We stopped often to enjoy breathtaking waterfalls and fall colors.

The sun was barely over the side of the canyon when we started, so we layered up to stay warm, but it quickly heated up after the sun rose. We removed layers at the first photo op.

It seemed that the creek was one continuous waterfall and we were surrounded by fall foliage.

We began to climb up the side of the canyon, heading toward the spring.

We arrived at the springs after a short climb.

Hi ho!! Hi ho! Seven hikers begin the trek back.

On the way back, Lin came to the aid of an older gentleman and earned a Trailblazers community service badge.

Everyone made it safely back to the trailhead. We went to Macky’s for a well-deserved meal.
