Trailblazers are you ready for the hike? [photo by Mohammed]
Carol, Mohammed .

Report by Mohammed After a leisurely breakfast at the Aspen Cafe, Carol and I hit the Twin Sisters Trail later in the morning. Despite our relaxed start, we were surprised by how quiet the trail was-over the entire hike, we only encountered five other people, allowing us to enjoy the serenity and solitude of the mountains almost entirely to ourselves.

The Twin Sisters Trail is one of Rocky Mountain National Park's classic summit hikes, located just southeast of Estes Park. The trail covers approximately 7.5 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of about 2,400 feet. The summit reaches 11,428 feet, offering panoramic views of Longs Peak, Mount Meeker, and the Continental Divide. The route is known for its steady and relentless incline, starting at around 9,100 feet and climbing through lodgepole pine forests, open meadows, and rocky switchbacks.

We took our time, savoring sweeping views and the distinctive features that make this hike special-such as the unique rock formations, areas affected by past landslides, and the rich diversity of alpine wildflowers. True to form, Carol and I talked the whole way up, covering a multitude of topics, sharing insights, and-at least in our minds-solving many of the world's problems. Our conversations are always rich, as we truly listen to one another.

As we approached the junction near the summit, we found ourselves enveloped in fog so thick that visibility dropped to barely a foot in front of us. That mysterious atmosphere made reaching the summit all the more memorable. The Twin Sisters' twin summits are a dramatic finish, with wide-open views (when the weather allows) and a sense of accomplishment from the climb.

On our descent, we were treated to a bit of mountain drama: light rain and a brief shower of small hail, adding a refreshing twist to the hike. Near the end, we were amazed to spot a large herd of elk lingering in the woods-somehow, we had missed them on the way up, but their presence was a fitting reward for our efforts.

Overall, the Twin Sisters Trail provided a peaceful and reflective climb, punctuated by great company, rewarding summit moments, and unexpected wildlife encounters-a truly memorable day in Rocky Mountain National Park.
