West Clear Creek – one of my all time favorite canyons!

Seven adventurous hikers showed up for this trek. Two of them – the leader, Sandy, and the co-leader, Eileen, though unplanned, dressed alike with identical tops and beige pants.

Taking two vehicles, we arrived at the junction of FR 81E and 693 at 10AM. We parked here and hiked 1.5 miles on FR 693 to begin our descent down the Tramway Trail.

Sandy had decided it would be better to do the loop in this direction as most of Tramway is not shaded. Best to take the morning sun than the afternoon heat. We decided afterwards that this was the best decision also, because it was easier scrambling down the rocks than to climb up them.

At the start of the Tramway we spotted cables wrapped around the base of an old alligator juniper. These were part of a tram system used to transport fish to stock the creek between the 1940s and 60s.

We made it down to West Clear Creek.

Once at the bottom of the canyon, we found it fairly good hiking. Most of the trail was well traveled. We did encounter some bushwhacking due to felled trees and several stream crossings – but none above the knees.

We stopped at the petroglyphs for lunch before heading further up the stream to the Maxwell Trail. The Maxwell Trail is marked with red ribbon tied onto several trees so you won’t miss it.

As far as wildlife in the canyon, someone spotted a bald eagle in the distance and we encountered a small rattlesnake on the trail which quickly sought shelter under a rock so we could pass.

All in all, a wonderful day – perfect weather, spectacular scenery, and a great group of hikers. Thanks to Sandy for suggesting this trip!
