Our group of nineteen hikers met on a cool and pleasant morning at around 7:00 AM at the Red Mountain Park gathering place, and soon thereafter we all car pooled to First Water Trailhead.

Following the shuttling of the vehicles to the Canyon Lake Marina, the trekkers soon took off down the Dutchman’s Trail.

Prior to starting, we went through the usual ritual of introductions.

At my request, Gary Gleason and Chuck Parsons volunteered to act as point and sweep respectively, making my job as hike leader a lot easier by assuring we wouldn’t leave anyone behind, or have someone get too far ahead of the group and not know their whereabouts. Their assistance made me a lot more comfortable, and I thank them for their help. I also wish to thank Wendy Rennert for offering to help with the car shuttle arrangements.

The hike was pleasant. It was a sunny day, with just slightly overcast skies, and the temperature was thus comfortable throughout the walk. The trail itself has really great views at several places, and several hikers took advantage of the views to take photos of several well known Superstition landmarks. The actual trek was in itself uneventful – the Dutchman’s Trail to Second Water Trail to Boulder Canyon Trail, and then down the slope to the Marina.

Everyone made it without difficulty, including Wendy Rennert who was still not fully recovered from the foot surgery she sustained several months ago. Wearing for the first time my new hiking boots, I tripped once, but suffered no injury except for a little embarrassment over the incident.

In the write-up I had posted on our website, I had indicated the hike distance as 7.4 miles, which was not correct – our actual hiking distance was more on the order of 8 miles.

After the hike, most of the group had lunch at the Marina restaurant, and the service and food there was good.

This was at least the fourth time our club had done this same hike. Prior hikes, all done in March, occurred in 2002, 2009, and 2010. I thank all who took part in this hike for their good company.
