Arizona Highways Travel Show
Phoenix
May 31, 2009
by Sheila Grant

A slightly different event for this club, the Arizona Highways Travel Show at the Convention Center turned out to be a hit with the fourteen club members and two friends who attended.

Eight of us met at First Watch restaurant at 1st Street and Washington for breakfast and lively conversation. From there we walked the short distance to the Convention Center just in time for the first presentation: “Exploring the Navajo Nation in Five Days.”

We were soon joined by Sandy, Cyd, Debbie, Linda, Joe and Terri, and Ted and Jacque. The group was loose knit as we explored the myriad booths collecting handouts of all sorts, from bed and breakfasts to white water rafting to helicopter rides. Many of us had to search out giveaway bags to carry our treasures around in. A wine tasting booth drew a few of us as well – no bag needed!

There were back-to-back presentations on two different stages and all were informative and well presented. Most of us spent the greater part of the day taking in these interesting talks.

About half the group hung in until the end of the last presentation: “Hiking Arizona” presented very humorously by Ranger B. His handout, which is excellent, names the Arizona Trailblazers second on his list of hiking clubs!

Six hungry souls, Ted and Jacque, Doug and Sheila, and Joe and Terri, headed out to the Thai Elephant on Adams for a wonderful dinner to top off a great day.

I’m sure all would agree that this was a highly enjoyable and informative event.
