April 10, 1998

Made it down to O’Neill Butte in good time.

Two of us (Mike Clayton and Bryan Kennelley) hiked down at 8:00 AM, across the Tonto to Indian Gardens by 11:30, ate a long lunch with the many Germans and French hiking that day, and then topped out around 3:30 PM. We did not see any other Motorola hikers on the trail. They must have started earlier or later than planned.

Weather was perfect (jacket in the morning for first hour, no ice or snow on trail, some mud, T-shirts the rest of the day). But it was a 1-2 day window on the weather. Snow before and after. We were lucky.

Grand Canyon springtime! The final approach to Indian Garden.

The Western Red-Bud trees in Indian Gardens put on their usual April showing. Cottonwoods in side canyons with new leaves. No cactus flowers yet in Canyon ... more in Phoenix area. By the way, no water at either rest stop (1.5 or 3 mile huts) on Bright Angel Trail. Get water at Indian Gardens or carry it all. We each used about 3 quarts. Apples were nice to eat ... but I will never touch another Tiger Bar!
