This hike is a continuation of Arizona Trail Passage 30.
We hiked Passage 30a on June 18 and Passage 30b on July 16.
This hike will cover Passage 30c from Horse Lake Trailhead south to the
Dairy Springs trailhead.
The club did essentially this hike in August 2014 going from Double
Springs to Pine Grove Campground and called it the Mineral Belt after
the historic railroad bed that the AZT follows a portion of the way.
Read that trip report
for a history of the area.
The new hike shifts the start and end points slightly northward.
We will start the hike at the Horse Lake Trailhead where there is ample parking. Proceed south, cross Forest Highway 3 (Lake Mary Road) and continue southward. The trail follows the old railroad bed a portion of the way. Intersect the Mormon Mountain Trial and turn left (east) and hike to the trailhead that is just west of Dairy Springs campground. This will be a car shuttle. Take to the end trailhead the minimum number of cars needed to get the hikers back to the start point (plus one to get the drivers back to begin the hike). We can go into Flagstaff for drinks and eats afterward. Passage 30 of the Arizona Trail is described by Matthew J. Nelson on pages 223-229 of Your Complete Guide to the Arizona National Scenic Trail. |
