where Flagstaff
the hike     This is a variation of the Sunset Trail to Mt. Elden summit loop that was hiked in 2016, avoiding the crowded trail that goes directly to the summit. We’ll begin this hike at the Arizona Trail/ Sandy Seep Trailhead, and connect to the Heart Trail, taking it to the summit. We will be hiking through some burned forest (extent unknown). We will then pick up the Sunset trail. The leaves may or may not be changing.
Our return will be partially on the Elden Lookout Trail, then Sunset Trail, but turning onto the Little Bear Trail, then south on AZT/Little Elden Mountain and going down to meet the Little Elden Springs Trail. From that trail, we’ll hike back downhill to the Sandy Seep Trailhead.
If two or more hikers want a shorter hike, you can return to the trailhead on the Elden Lookout Trail, which is 10 miles. No solo hikers for this option.
