Arizona Trailblazers Hiking Club
Quartz Loop Trail Plus Twobit Peak
when Trip Report : February 21, 2015
where Phoenix Mountain Preserve
the hike     This hike is a seven and a half mile loop east of Piestewa Peak. We will start at the trailhead north of Lincoln Drive at 32nd Street and proceed northward on trail 8A. After two miles we will turn right on to Trail 8 and follow it east for 0.3 miles and then north for 0.5 miles and look for the turnoff to the right for Twobit Peak. This hill was called “Dixie Peak” and was one of the peaks used November, 2014, in the Phoenix Summit Challenge. It is reported to have an elevation gain of 887 feet. We will climb the peak take a break and retrace our path back to where we left 8A and continue westward on 8 and follow it around to the junction with Trail 8B.
Here we have a choice of following 8B back to 8A and return to the trailhead or continue south, hike a short distance along the road for the Piestewa Trailhead and then follow 202 back to 8B and then back to the starting point. Trails 8 and 8A are also known as the Quartz Trail because there a some large white quartz boulders along the way.
This hike is right in the middle of the city but it is amazing how quickly you lose complete sight of anything urban. The trail is not so heavily traveled as Piestewa Peak, so should provide a good hiker experience.
