the hike     South Mountain Park/Preserve, at 16,000 acres and with more than 50 miles of trails, is one of the largest city parks in the nation.
We will do a popular lollipop course, starting from the Mormon Trailhead, ascending boulder like terrain with quick elevation gain. At the junction, we take the National Trail west until it reaches the Hidden Valley Loop. Then turn east and squeeze through boulders known a Fat Man’s Pass. Continue east, through Hidden Valley tunnel, to complete the loop. We then return to the parking lot on the Mormon Trail.
The trail involves sliding a short distance down a boulder which looks tougher than it is.
Depending on the group and if everyone agrees, extending by a mile or two is an option.
