Spur Cross to Chalk Canyon Day Hike

the hike	Spur Cross Trail NNE to Old Gate, passing into Tonto National Forest.     Several Creek/Wash crossings that might be sand and stones or water and stepping stones, or a bit of splashing. Bring poles and water shoes, high boots and short pants ;-) at your disgression.     We’ll hike into Chalk Canyon to petroglyphs, fossils, hawk’s nest, multi-person metates and valley vistas, where we'll stop to look around and have a snack     On the return trip, we’ll take the Metate Trail instead of Spur Cross past the Solar Oasis and the original Spur Cross Dude Ranch ruins to come back to start.     PortaPotties but no water at start. Maricopa County pass covers entrance. Otherwise $3.00. Required: •  Sturdy hiking boots •  At least 3 liters of water •  Rain poncho •  Hat, sunblock, sunglasses Recommended: •  Lunch or snacks •  Camera

meet	5:00 AM in the North Mountain Visitor Center. It’s 47 minutes from there.
drive	•  From the 101 take exit 28, Cave Creek Road. • Travel east on Cave Creek Rd for about 12 miles. (Speed traps N of Carefree Hwy). • Turn left onto N Spur Cross Road for 0.2 mile. • Turn right on E Grapevine Rd and immediately left, back onto N Spur Cross Road. 4.1 miles to Spur Cross Ranch. • The last portion of the road into the ranch is dirt but still doable by any car. Just watch for potholes and wildlife.
